"Thank you for entertaining Boston like no one else can for a quarter of a century. Here's to many more memorable Friday nights." - K.J.
To learn a little about the history of the Friday Night Sing-Along and hear from some of the regulars, please watch the video below that was done in conjunction with an online story the Boston Herald did a few years ago on the piano bar.
Every Friday night at Jacob Wirth restaurant for nearly thirty years, Mel led Boston's most unique piano bar. The current venue for the Friday event is Democracy Brewing in Boston's Downtown Crossing area. Part of what makes it so distinctive is that books with words to more than 500 oldies and rock songs of the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s are handed out to patrons of all ages, who then eat, drink, and, as a community, sing from 8:00-10:00. The proximity of the piano to the patrons, and Mel's interaction with the crowd, adds to the piano bar's uniqueness.
Over the past three decades a rich array of story lines have developed from the Friday night sing-alongs. Friendships and romantic relationships have both begun and been nurtured around the piano, including one couple who recently married after meeting one Friday night singing at Jacob Wirth. Two marriage proposals were publicly made in front of the piano on Friday nights. Mel was asked to perform the wedding ceremony of two people who felt the piano bar had an important influence on the development of their relationship. And some patrons visit from other states and even other countries whenever they are in Boston.
The Friday night piano bar has been featured on Chronicle and recommended in Zagat’s and Fodor’s. Come in to Democracy Brewing and see why many say it is their favorite way to spend a Friday night in Boston.
